NEWSLETTER - MAY 2011

Well, Greetings once more!

As always, there’s a gap between me putting pen to paper, and you reading this on the website, so I hope we all enjoyed the Royal Wedding, and Easter, and, if this gets published on time, we’ve still got May Bank to look forward to! Let’s hope the weather holds as April brought us some wonderful sunny days.......

2012 will see the 80th anniversary of the Perkins engines, many a CF was powered by the 4108.

From 1945-1962, Perkins transformed not only the UK’s road and marine transport, but also brought power to the land.

The present company has released a wonderful DVD, not only looking at Perkins, but also the firms they supplied, from Ice-Cream to Cement, a real “slice” through British history of the period. “You’ve never had it so good” £15 a copy, inclusive of P&P, copies available from Wayne Davey, External Events Coordinator, Perkins Heritage Group, Perkins Engines Limited, Peterborough, PE1 5NA. The telephone number is 01733-583406.

Let’s hope the Perkins Heritage Group manage to attend some of the various shows in 2012, if only because they have great free goody bags!!

On the subject of Perkins, after three attempts we finally managed to get our hands on an uncracked 4108 cylinder head. This we took to W. Drakes, who fitted it with new guides, seats and valves. It was then tested for cracks again, surfaced and assembled ready to fit, £495 plus VAT. A really good price if you consider how hard these are to find, the head works out at £195, refurbishment at £300, what a bargain, half the price of a new one.

We also have in stock a fully reconditioned 2300cc petrol engine, £1650 plus VAT. With a new cylinder head rebuild history available with this unit.

IS THERE AN AFTERLIFE?

Well, it would appear so, as many CF ice cream vans are going abroad as “collectors items”, or to be gutted and refitted as Fish and Chip vans or burger vans.

Several have become “Festival Vans” plying the trade of their owners as fire-eaters, palm readers, or the “Curious Co” Dance Troupe, available for bookings at www.mstudiogallery.net From vast shows such as Glastonbury to village events, even a mobile theatre.

On a recent trip to Morecambe I came across this fabulous restored Morrison icecream van the owner Kate is one of a new generation of owners who has seen the “RETRO” potential of this period vans having it just appeared in the COOP advert , it is beautifully refinished in soft pastel colours with period fittings echoing happy times. Kate  shows how it should be done , and has a stunning web site to match, www.everyday-is-like-sundae.co.uk
